Last man standing rules
Premier League last man standing — also called a football survivor pool or a knockout sweepstake — has one of the shortest rule sheets in football. Here is the complete set of rules used on EPL Knockout, followed by answers to the awkward questions that come up mid-season.
The rules
- 1. Pick one team a gameweek. Before the first kick-off of the round, every player selects a single Premier League club.
- 2. Your team has to survive the week. In a win-only league — the most popular version — your club must win. In a win-or-draw league, avoiding defeat is enough. Your league states which one it uses.
- 3. Lose and you are out. A defeat eliminates you for the rest of the competition (as does a draw in a win-only league), unless your league allows rebuys or lives.
- 4. No team twice. Once you have used a club, you can never pick it again. Twenty clubs, one season, no repeats.
- 5. Miss the deadline and a team is assigned. The site auto-picks the first unused club playing that round for you, so a forgotten pick doesn't automatically end your season.
- 6. Last player standing wins. When only one player is left alive, they take the prize — or the whole pot in a paid league.
Win only, or win or draw?
This is the one rule every group has to agree on, and the two versions play very differently.
Most popular
Win only
Your team must win. A draw knocks you out exactly like a defeat. It is now the version most office, pub and WhatsApp leagues play: harsher, faster, and impossible to misread on a 0-0. Expect a winner in fewer gameweeks.
The classic
Win or draw
Avoiding defeat is enough. More forgiving, so seasons run longer — a better fit for a small group that wants the competition to last, or for players new to the format.
Neither is "correct" — we simply let you choose. The survival rule is the first thing you set when creating a league, it is printed on the league page and on every invite, and the site settles results by whichever version you picked. Everything below is the same in both. How to start a league walks through the choice.
Rules the host can change
- Draws. Default is win-or-draw survives. Hosts can make a draw an elimination for a much shorter, harsher competition.
- Buy-in and prize split. Free to play, or any entry fee, paid out to between one and five places.
- Rebuys. Let eliminated players buy back in, adding to the pot.
- Team reuse. Allow a club to be picked again after a set number of gameweeks.
- Wildcards. Double Life (survive one defeat), Skip a Week (sit a round out and survive), Team Reuse (ignore the no-repeat rule once) and Insurance Week (a draw survives even in a win-only league).
Whatever the host chooses is displayed on the league page before the first deadline, and the site enforces it automatically.
Common questions
What happens if my team draws?
You survive. Under standard EPL Knockout rules a win or a draw keeps you in — only a defeat knocks you out. League hosts can switch on a stricter 'draw counts as a loss' setting, in which case only a win survives, and that rule is shown on the league page before the first deadline.
Is last man standing win only, or does a draw survive?
Both versions are played. Win only — where a draw knocks you out just like a defeat — has become the most common variation, especially in office, pub and WhatsApp leagues, because it is quicker and leaves nothing to interpret. Win or draw is the classic, more forgiving version and produces longer seasons. On EPL Knockout the host chooses when creating the league, and the choice is displayed on the league page and every invite.
Can I pick the same team twice?
No. Once you have used a club it is gone for the rest of the competition, so all twenty Premier League clubs are effectively your budget for the season. Hosts can optionally allow a club to be reused after a set number of gameweeks, or hand out a Team Reuse wildcard.
What happens if a Premier League game is postponed?
Nothing happens to you yet. Your pick stays pending and is settled when the match is eventually played and the result comes in. You are neither survived nor eliminated in the meantime, and you still make a normal pick in the following gameweek.
What happens if a match is abandoned?
The same as a postponement: the pick stays pending until the fixture has an official final result. If the league awards the result of the abandoned match, that result settles your pick.
What happens if I forget to make a pick?
The site tries to save you. When the deadline passes without a pick, you are automatically given the first unused club (alphabetically) that plays in that gameweek. If no club is available to assign and the gameweek finishes with no pick recorded against your name, you are eliminated.
When is the selection deadline?
The deadline is the first kick-off of the gameweek. Every pick for that round must be in before that match starts. The countdown to the next deadline is shown on your league page and on the fixtures page, and reminder emails go out before it.
Can I change my selection?
Yes, as many times as you like right up until the deadline. Once the first match of the gameweek kicks off, picks are locked and revealed to the rest of the league.
Can I see what everybody else has picked?
Not before the deadline. Picks are hidden until the round locks so nobody can simply copy the leader, then the whole league's selections are revealed together.
What happens if everyone loses in the same gameweek?
If every surviving player is eliminated in the same round, they are treated as joint winners and the pot is shared between them. Hosts who prefer a different tie-break — such as replaying the round — should agree that with their league before the season starts.
How is a winner determined?
The last player still alive wins. If the host has set up multiple paid places, the prize is split according to the prize split they configured (up to five places), with players ranked by the gameweek they went out in.
How long does a last man standing competition last?
It varies enormously. Big leagues often produce a winner within eight to twelve gameweeks; small ones can run for months. With only twenty clubs available and no repeats, a competition cannot run beyond twenty rounds unless the host allows team reuse or rebuys.
Can eliminated players get back in?
Only if the host has enabled rebuys. When they are on, a knocked-out player can buy back in up to the limit the host sets, their entry is added to the pot, and they start again with a fresh set of clubs.
